FAQ
What are outdoor roller blinds used for in Singapore?
Outdoor roller blinds in Singapore are primarily used for sun protection and daytime privacy on balconies, patios, corridors, and alfresco areas. They use sunscreen fabric that reduces solar heat and glare while keeping the space ventilated and open.
What is sunscreen fabric for outdoor blinds?
Sunscreen fabric is an open-weave mesh used in outdoor blinds to filter UV radiation and reduce heat without completely blocking airflow or the view. It comes in different openness factors — 0.5%, 1%, 3%, and 5%. Standard supply from VB Blind is 5% openness.
Do outdoor roller blinds provide full privacy?
Outdoor roller blinds with sunscreen fabric provide daytime privacy — from outside, it is difficult to see clearly into the space during the day. At night, when interior lights are on, the privacy level is reduced. For a fully sealed or higher-privacy solution, ZipScreen is a better option.
Are outdoor roller blinds waterproof?
The sunscreen fabric is water-repellent and weather-resistant, suited to light rain and Singapore’s outdoor humidity. However, outdoor roller blinds are not designed as a fully sealed weather enclosure — they do not seal at the edges. For sealed weather protection, refer to ZipScreen.
What is the maximum size for outdoor roller blinds in Singapore?
Manual outdoor roller blinds: max 2.5m wide by 3.0m drop (min 0.6m wide). Motorised: max 3.0m wide by 3.5m drop (min 0.8m wide). Both ceiling and wall mount.
Can outdoor roller blinds be motorised?
Yes. VB Blind outdoor roller blinds are available with motorised operation using Dooya, AOK, or Somfy motors. RF remote control is standard. IP-rated (weatherproof) motors are used for outdoor installations. Mains power required — no battery option.
What openness factor should I choose for my balcony?
5% is our standard recommendation for most Singapore balconies — it gives the best balance of sun reduction, view-through, and air circulation. If you want more UV blocking or privacy, choose 3% or 1%. For near-maximum privacy and sun blocking, 0.5% is the tightest weave available.
Can outdoor blinds withstand Singapore rain and wind?
VB Blind outdoor roller blinds use weather-resistant fabric, and the manual chain system has a UV stabilised coating. They are designed to handle regular Singapore outdoor exposure. However, they are not wind-rated like ZipScreen — in strong winds, the blind may move. We recommend retracting manual outdoor blinds during heavy storms.
Is a catalogue available for outdoor roller blinds?
Yes — a VB Blind Outdoor Roller Blind catalogue is available. Download it from this page or contact us at tsc@vbblind.com.
What is the difference between outdoor roller blinds and ZipScreen?
Outdoor roller blinds use a standard guide system — the edges of the fabric are not sealed. They are suitable for sun and daytime privacy. ZipScreen uses a zip-channel system that locks the fabric edges into side channels, providing wind resistance, sealed edges, and a more complete outdoor enclosure. ZipScreen is a premium upgrade from standard outdoor blinds.
